What do you do for work?
Doctor? Activist? Single Parent? Author?
When people ask me what I do, I say I’m a GP.
But here’s the real answer: I’m a doctor fascinated by understanding the truth of real health- seeing through the tropes and narratives shaped by commercial interests and societal norms, to the truly human experience beneath.
I spent many years as a surgeon, literally looking inside bodies. Then I shifted perspective to study health through a UCL Masters in Medical Anthropology. With a more open-minded understanding of what health means across cultures, I retrained as a GP to apply that insight in practice.
But in general practice, I found myself working within a commercially driven system, where many of my patients were living with the commercial determinants of health. In fact, the more carefully I listened, the more I realized that commercial determinants seem to be the mainstay of modern disease causation.
Recently, I’ve focused on the commercial food environment and am committed to helping people recognise the hidden impact it is having on our bodies and minds.
On paper, it looks like this:
Cardiff Medical School — MBBCh
Surgical Training UK — MRCS
Surgical Registrar
Medical Writer
Medical Anthropologist — MSc
GP — MRCGP
Health Inequalities Fellow
Author, working title: Real Food Revolution (nearly finished). This book will tie together my 25 years of experience as a doctor, my experience as a single parent, my experience as a messy human being trying to navigate an increasingly corporate-dominated world of profiteerism, and most recently, my experience of becoming an author.
Thanks for subscribing to my substack. I’ve been off for a while - busy writing a book. Going forwards, I intend to post more often, and will be starting some exclusive sneak peaks of my book - Real Food Revolution - where I will reveal why what we eat is so badly affecting our health, why this is, and what to do about it.
This is a person- centred book, and I would love to start some conversations around this to include in what I’m writing. I would love to hear your comments, all opinions are welcome x
